James Cochran Suber of 6163 Jalapa Road, Kinards, S.C. passed away June 15, 2011. Mr. Suber, born August 27, 1930, was the son of the late John Robert and Mildred Cochran Suber of Whitmire, S.C. He was a graduate of Wofford College and a member of the Wofford Terriers Baseball team. He received his ROTC commission at Wofford and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Suber retired as Director of Licensing and Certification Services for the Piedmont Region of the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs and was the former Director of Vocational Services at Whitten Center. Mr. Suber raised Hereford cattle on his farm and was honored as a member of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Muriel Stone Suber and daughter, Susan Satterfield-Suber (Russell) and son, James C. Suber, Jr. (Tammy) all of Kinards, S.C.; a sister, Mildred S. Tyler; a brother, Martin Gay Suber; grandchildren, Benjamin Stone Hughes (Tricia), Jessica Suber Hall (Christian), Jordan Suzanne Suber and Jennifer Starnes Coppedge (DeWayne); great-grandchildren, Haley Clare Hughes, Jade Madison Hughes, Stella Milan Hall, Riley Coppedge and Skyler Coppedge. He was predeceased by a brother, Jon R. Suber, Jr.

Graveside services will be held at Whitmire Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 17, 2011, with the Reverend Todd Johnson officiating and assisted by Reverend Jim Williams. Visitation will be immediately following the services at the Whitmire United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Ken Coleman, William Luke Hart, Phillip David Maness, William O. Johnson, Irby Raines, and A.H. Walker and honorary pallbearer, 1 st Lieutenant Christian D. Hall, U.S. Army, Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 497, Newberry, South Carolina 29108.
