John Clarence "J.C." McCartha

John Clarence “J.C.” McCartha, 101, of Newberry, widower of Lucy Bradley McCartha, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 28, 1922, in Newberry, he was the son of the late Willie John and Mattie Mae Mills McCartha.  He was a World War II veteran who served in the US Navy.  Mr. McCartha retired from American Fiber and Finishing (Kendall Company) and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by sons, James B. McCartha of Prosperity, C. Wayne McCartha of Columbia and Gerald “Jerry” (Sue) Carver of Waterloo; sisters, Mary Frances Hembree of Newberry and Ruby (Alton) Lake of Prosperity; a daughter-in-law, Joyce McCartha of Chappell; a brother-in-law, Charles Leopard of Newberry; nine grandchildren twenty great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Marcella Lake.

He was predeceased a daughter, Brenda Coppock, a son, Randy McCartha a sister, Lila Leopard; daughter-in-law, Edith McCartha and a brother-in-law, Dan Hembree.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, May 24, 2024, at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Townsend.  Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 -4:00 pm.
