James “Harvey” Berley, 86, of Pomaria died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his residence.
Born November 24, 1926 in Pomaria, he was the son of the late James Hartford and Lula Mae Wicker Berley. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Army of the United States, T4, Sargeant from February 15, 1945 to December 18, 1946. He served as Commissary Steward for HQ Company Armed Forces in the Middle/South Pacific stationed at Fort Shafter, Honolulu, Hawaii. His medals included: Asiatic Pacific Service, Good Conduct, and WWII Victory. He was retired from Covil Corporation after 32 years. Mr. Berley was an active lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and he was an avid supporter of the church softball teams.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Suber Berley; daughters, Nancy (Jerry) Carswell and Linda (Shane) Livingston; granddaughters, Lindsey (Eric) Huffstetler, Rebecca Livingston, and Jessica Powers; a great-granddaughter, Layla Huffstetler; brothers, Billy (Peggy) Berley and Donald (Janis) Berley; sisters, Mildred Fowler, Troxel Sligh, and Shirley Riley; and a sister-in-law, Pat Berley. He was predeceased by a brother, Everette Berley; and brothers-in-law, Eugene Fowler, Claude Sligh, and Tommy Riley.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. The Family will receive friends following the service . In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Men’s Club Missions, 2360 Mt. Pleasant Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.
Active pallbearers will be Eric Huffstetler, Evan Pitts, Jay Berley, Paul Fowler, Andy Berley, Dale Smith, Russell Suber, and Russell Kibler. Honorary pallbearers will be Cynthia Aull, Henry Berley, Gary Graham, Dr. Carroll Pinner,III Raymond Smith, Anna Wise, and Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Suber.
The family would like to express deepest gratitude to the doctors and staff of Pinner Clinic and Blue Ridge Hospice for their care. A special word of thanks is extended to the many family and friends for their continued support during his extended illness.
