James P. “J.P.” Herrin, Jr. 87, of Newberry, died Monday, October 6, 2014, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 22, 1926, in Aiken, he was a son of the late James P. Herrin, Sr. and Fannie Mae Toole Herrin. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from Bell South. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was in the Fellowship Sunday School Class, an usher, on the teller committee and was a nursing home helper.

Mr. Herrin is survived by his wife, Ruby Connelly Herrin; sons, James D. (Lori) Herrin and Alan W. (Andy) Herrin both of Aiken; a daughter, Alicia Herrin (Jerry) Willingham of Newberry; step-daughters, Linda Hiller of Prosperity and Dale (Mark) Smith of Newberry; sisters, Lorena Jackson and Evelyn Finnegan both of Aiken; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Herrin was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Perkins Herrin, a grandson, Jessie Marcus Willingham, brother, Perrin P. Herrin, sisters, Julia Herrin, Cleora H. Henkes and Frances Botkin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, October 9, 2014, at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Albert Allen and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1020 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Nichols, D.L. Longshore, Mike Willingham, Clarence Livingston, David Barrineau, Sam Botkin, Jim Parks and Ed Stephenson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Shirley Livingston, Sarah Longshore and members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class

The family extends special thanks to Laquinta Wheeler and Ed Stephenson for their loving care.
