James Paul “Pete” Dowd, Sr., 89, of Pomaria, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at his residence.
Born on April 18, 1924, in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Mary Dowd Duckett. He was a Army veteran, retired as a civil service employee from Fort Jackson and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Mr. Dowd is survived by his wife, Christine Lindler Dowd; a son, James P. “Bud” (Donna K.) Dowd, Jr. of Pomaria; daughters, Dottie (Keith) Anderson of Chapin and Debbie (Donald) Wessinger of Pomaria; grandchildren, Jessica Cannon, Will Anderson, Jason Wessinger, Cody Wessinger, Kristin Miller and Jamie Hall and great-grandchildren, Sarah Anderson, Caroline, Levi and Leland Wessinger and Kaylee Miller. Mr. Dowd was predeceased by his siblings, Annie Boland, John Dowd, Lee Dowd, Lonnie Dowd, Berley Dowd, Frank Dowd and Elbert “Po” Dowd.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, July 19, 2013, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00- 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Restoration Fund, c/o First Community Bank, PO Box 417, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 110 Ministry Drive, Ste B, Irmo, SC 29063.
Active pallbearers will be Alex Dowd, David Tate, Danny Dowd, Edwin Dowd, Billy Kern and David Farr.
Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Blue Ridge Hospice.
