James Oscar Quattlebaum, 82, of Newberry, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital after several years of declining health.
James was born on July 4, 1940, in Newberry, SC to the late Alton and Annie Belle Harmon Quattlebaum. He graduated from Newberry College with a degree in Chemistry. James served his country in the U.S. Air Force before working as a research chemist in Aiken. However, he eventually chose to become self-employed as a poultry farmer in pursuit of his passion for agriculture.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who had strong family values.
James was well known for his exceptional work ethics and commitment towards his profession and the community. His contributions to the field of agricultural science are highly acclaimed and will be remembered for years to come. In addition to his professional achievements, James had many qualities that drew others towards him. His warm personality was infectious and made everyone feel welcome in his company.
He was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church and an honorary member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 2:00 pm at St Matthew's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Mike Shackelford and Rev. Lloyd Roberts. Military Honors will be renendered. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, PO Box 170, Pomaria, SC 29126.
James is survived by his wife, Janice King Quattlebaum; a daughter, Jacquelyn (Dennis) Graham of Pomaria and a grandson, James Graham. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Quattlebaum.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Brandy Sease, Missy Franklin and Christy Gardner for their special help during these past few years.
