John Bynum “J.B.” Cheek, 83, of Newberry, died Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Dorn VA Medical Center.

Born on August 3, 1933, in Hartwell, GA, he was son of the late John Bynum and Mildred Booth Cheek. He was an Army veteran. He had worked in the trucking industry and following retirement along with his wife they were sanctioned by the North American Mission Board to work with the Campers on Mission. For a period of ten or twelve years he ministered for the Lord by assisting with the establishment of a church in Goshen, IN and sharing Gods word to carnival workers each year at the annual Strawberry Festival in Florida. Upon retirement to Newberry he joined Glenn Street Baptist Church where he was active in Sunday School, the choir and the Men's Ministry.

He is survived by a sister, Jeanette Rhodes; sons, Keith Cheek, Kevin Cheek and Philip Cheek; daughters, Amy Cheek and Valerie Tucker; step-sons, Phil Oakes, Tim Oakes and Matthew Oakes; eight grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. J.B. was predeceased by his wife, Doris Eileen Lightner Cheek on May 8, 2017. He was also predeceased by a son, Brian Cheek and siblings, Sara Sullivan, Mabel Drummond and Thomas Cheek.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Whitesides. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Glenn Street Baptist Church Food Pantry or WMU Ministry, 300 Glenn Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
