Jean Dawkins Norman, 92, of Newberry, widow of Vello Norman, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Springfield Place.
Born on January 24, 1932, in Newberry, she was the daughter of the late Fitzue Bryan Dawkins and Reba Long Dawkins. Mrs. Norman was a graduate of Newberry High School and attended Newberry College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked for the telephone company in Newberry then later moved to Greenville where she worked for Liberty Life. After her marriage, she moved to Chapel Hill, NC where she lived for most of her life. While living in North Carolina, she was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham. After returning to Newberry, she joined her home church, Central United Methodist Church.Jean enjoyed painting and proudly displayed many pieces of her work. She was a lover of animals, especially dogs. She loved to travel, and took many trips with her cousin, Dorothy Hunt on Kat Dawkins’s bus tours. She especially enjoyed taking trips out west or to places with historical significance. Jean was known to be a direct and determined person.
She is survived by cousins, Kathy (Bobby) Holladay, Cindy Hunt, Julie Hunt, and Wilton Dennis as well as numerous other cousins.She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and their daughter, Daphne Norman, as well as her beloved cousin, Dorothy Dawkins Hunt (Buddy). A special thank you to cousins Bob and Mary Helen Dawkins, a neighbor, Debbie Graham, and caregiver, Janis Gary for their love and care for Jean.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Laura Parrish. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
