James Carroll "Jimmy" Bonner was born September 23, 1952 to the late Mr. Glenn George Bonner, Sr. and the late Mrs. Velma Counts Bonner. He joined the Lord on Saturday, February 15, 2025 surrounded by family and friends after a four-year struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was a graduate of Mid-Carolina High School and he subsequently earned a welding degree from Midlands Technical College. In his younger years, he was a volunteer firefighter in Newberry County, supporting all fire departments throughout the county. He retired from Allied Chemical, where he had not one single leak in his repairs of equipment in his 42 years of employment.
In high school, he was lead singer in a band, "Granny's Bandits," unknowingly naming it after his most treasured person, his mother, who would eventually be called "Granny." One of his most cherished memories from his youth was his time spent in the Hay-Day Posse as a cowboy actor. Another precious pastime was playing guitar with his brother and singing with his family after Sunday dinner in the Snack Shop. Jimmy was a humble man of great faith. He had an extreme passion for helping others, especially the elderly. He had a profound faith in God and Loved to witness for Him. He was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in Pomaria, where he served on council, various committees, and taught middle-aged Sunday School. Jimmy was a natural-born magician with numerous hobbies and talents. He had a sense of humor that was sure to bring laughter to every room he entered. Growing and sharing his garden was one of his greatest joys. He loved drawing with charcoals, target shooting, and creating art pieces with his metal and wood-making, many of which turned into gifts to help and delight those he loved. One of his most precious creations, still visible in his yard today, is his daughters' yellow playhouse, complete with a spiral staircase. Perhaps, the only talent he would ever boast about was being able to jump over a line of five people lying down in a row as a teen manager at Bonner's Skating Rink. Above all, he would want to be remembered for his love of Jesus, his family, and his friends.
He leaves behind his dearest friend, Sarah Bonner, with their two daughters, Jennifer Bonner Estes and her husband, Merrick, and their two children, Tradd and Cara; Jessica Bonner Parise and her husband, Brandon, and their two daughters, Valerie and Livia; his brother, Glenn George Bonner, Jr. and his wife, Brandy, and their family; sister, Sandra Bonner Goodman and her husband, Mike, and their family.
Honorary Pallbearers are Ashlyn Bowers Baker, Nathaniel "Julio" Belton, Doug Bozard, Danny Craft, Sandy Craft, Mark Counts, Tommy Griffin, Larry McCartha, Roddy McDonald, Lamar Rister, Harroll Stockman, James Stockman, Otis Watts, Donald Wessinger, and Jeff Woodruff; and in memorandum, Bo Black and Pastor Steve Jackson.
Casual dress is encouraged for services held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 1:00 in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 209 New Hope Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.
