Joan Schilling Barfield, 78, of Newberry, widow of George William Barfield, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on September 16, 1933, in Richmond, VA, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Nicholas and Pearl Harding Schilling. She was retired from the Episcopal Church Upper Diocese of S.C. Mrs. Barfield was very active in her church and community. She was a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church the Miller Hamby Sunday School Class and was a volunteer at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by a son, William “Billy” Barfield, Jr. of Columbia; a daughter, Beth (Jerry) Tankersley of Columbia; brothers, Bobby Schilling and Charles Schilling both of Lexington; grandchildren, Larry (Pennie) Tankersley, Ashleigh (Will) Speaks and Andrew (Ally) Tankersley and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barfield was predeceased by a son, Nicholas Andrew Barfield, a sister, Betty V. Roberts and brothers, John Schilling and Lewis Schilling.

Joan was a generous and loving woman. She never met a stranger and spent all of her time doing for others. She had amazing compassion and genuine love for all God's creatures, no creature went hungry around her. She was fun loving and loved a good laugh. Everyone she met became her friend. Visiting at the hospital and the nursing home were her daily missions She loved her church, her family, and all of her many many friends. She carried these with her always, "Those who live in the Lord never see each other for the last time", and, "Love and Memories are forever". She will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Counts. Committal services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 21, 2012, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
