John Derrick

John Franklin Derrick, 77, of Newberry, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at White Oak Manor.

Mr. Derrick was born on September 10, 1933, he was a lifelong resident of Newberry County and the youngest son of Mays Pressley and Effie Shealy Derrick. He was a graduate of Silverstreet High School class of 1952 and the Palmetto Military Academy class of 1958. Mr. Derrick served in the S.C. National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve for over 27 years and retired with the rank of Major. He was retired from Southern Engineering of Atlanta as a field engineer. He was a past president and board member at Newberry Country Club of Newberry and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Bryan Derrick; a son and daughter-in-law, John Bryan Derrick and Beth Singletary; granddaughters, Briley and Erin Derrick; a sister, Mary Ruth Mack and a sister-in-law, Gussie B. Derrick.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1605 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
