John Dudley Hunter, 84, of Prosperity, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born on February 26, 1933, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Dudley Hamp and Nancy Stockman Hunter. He was a retired Air Force veteran having served in the Vietnam War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Mr. Hunter graduated from Piedmont Technical College, assisted in the initial construction of the Georgia Pacific Plant in Prosperity, was retired from Senior Catering of Little Mountain, and was a farmer. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council. He was a Mason and a member of the Newberry Cattleman's Association.

Family was a very important part of Mr. Hunter's life as he is survived by his wife, Priscilla Monk Hunter; sons, Shawn (Cynthia) Hunter and Philip (Vikki) Hunter both of Prosperity, Paul (Teresa) Hunter of Newberry and Micheal (Belinda) Hunter of Nevada, MO; daughters, Caroline (Paul) Brandt, Penny (Jim) Ballantyne and Sandra (Joel) Lewis all of Prosperity; seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Mr. Hunter was predeceased by twin sons, Mark and Christopher Hunter, and siblings, Mildred Evans, Sydney Hunter and Vernon Hunter.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jason Schafer. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 4056 St. Luke's Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127

Active pallbearers will be his elder grandsons.
