A funeral service celebrating the life of John E. Campbell of Newberry, SC will be held at 4:00 pm Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Glenn Street Baptist Church. Reverend Michael Whitesides will officiate. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. John passed away at his home on Saturday, May 24, 2014 after a courageous battle with health problems. He was born in Newberry, SC on November 4, 1937, and was the son of the late Lester C. and Mamie Turner Campbell. John attended Newberry County public schools and graduated from Newberry High School. He completed courses in law enforcement and narcotics and dangerous drugs. He served on the board of Newberry Commission of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. He was a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard Reserves for ten years.
He began his working career with Kemper Chevrolet in the parts department in 1957. In April 1962 he joined the Newberry City Police Department under Chief Colie Dowd where he remained until his retirement as Captain in 1993.
John loved his church family, Glenn Street Baptist Church, where he was active in all services, meetings, activities and served on the Board of Deacons.
He is survived by his wife, Nonie Berry Campbell; daughters, Kim Campbell and Candace (Eric) Nolting; granddaughters, Summer and Campbell Nolting all of Newberry; a sister, Martha (Dale) Pugh of Prosperity. John was predeceased in death by a sister, Reba (David) Lindler of Chapin.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Berry, David Berry, Randy Berry, Keith Berry, Mark Berry, Tim Berry, Stan Berry, and Jeff Pugh.
Honorary pallbearers will be retirees of all branches of law enforcement, members of the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class of Glenn Street Baptist Church and active and inactive deacons of Glenn Street Baptist Church.
John will certainly be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
