John W. Rawls of Prosperity passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 20, 2010, surrounded by family.

Born September 29, 1923, in Pomaria, SC, Mr. Rawls was the son of the late William Alvin and Clara Wicker Rawls. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Long Rawls and sisters, Lula Ella and Tommie Brunelle Rawls.

Mr. Rawls was an army veteran of World War II having served his country in North Africa and Italy. He worked many years at ISE (formerly Central Soya) of Newberry and retired from Counts Sausage Company. His passion was his German Shepherds. Strong friendships were developed and countless hours spent “talking dogs” with those who shared his interest in the breed.

Mr. Rawls was very active in his church, Sunday School and the Swingers Group at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran. He was a caring and devoted family man and friend.

Mr. Rawls is survived by his son, Stanley Rawls and his wife, Julia of Sumter, and daughter, Helen Koon and her husband, Ritchie of Prosperity; a sister, Ruby Mae Graham of Pomaria and three grandsons, John Rawls, Justin and Travis Koon.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 23, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ronald Smith and Reverend Elford Roof officiating. Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry. The family suggests that memorials be made to the charity of choice or to Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, PO Box 678, Prosperity, SC 29127.
