Johnny T. Hickman, 74, of Newberry, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at the Medical University of South Carolina.
He was born on July 3, 1943 in Texas. John spent many years as a farmer and was very active at the Newberry Disabilities and Special Needs Board and chose to work at the PRIDE Business Center, even though he was eligible to retire. He took great pleasure in participating in the Area 5 Special Olympics for the past two years where he excelled in bowling. On November 11, 2017, he was able to go to Greenville to participate in the Special Olympic bowling event where he was awarded the silver medal (2 nd place). It was from there that he was chosen to be an alternate to the National Special Olympics which are to be held in Seattle, Washington in June of this year.
He is survived by his “brothers” of the home, Carlos Morris, Leon Jones and Claude Wren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Moses Rembert and Rev. Jimmy Counts. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ruth S. Pugh Foundation PO Box 856 Newberry, S. C. 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Carlos Morris, Leon Jones, Claude Wren, Jerry Young, Frank Atchinson and Robert “Bob” Jones.
