Jonathan Chelsey Lowe Jr., born December 8, 1925 in Spartanburg, was the son of the late Jonathan Chelsey and Charlsie Cline Lowe. He graduated from Spartanburg High School and joined the United States Navy, serving in World War II as a Seaman First Class. Upon completion of his service, Jonathan entered the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1950. He was called back to active duty during the Korean War and served until 1953.

Jonathan worked for the South Carolina Tax Commission while obtaining his Masters of Education at Georgia Southern. He was a teacher and principal in Allendale until he moved to Prosperity in the late seventies. He taught at Mid-Carolina Junior High and Newberry Junior High until his retirement in 1988. Jonathan was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and was a Sunday School teacher. He loved his church and attended until his health failed.

Jonathan enjoyed many hobbies after retirement. He was a founding member of the Lake Murray Senior’s Bass Club. He designed stained glass and eventually created all the buildings in his beloved Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. He donated the collection to the Tenn. Park Service. Jonathan enjoyed surprising his family and friends with colorful stained glass windows, ornaments, and sun catchers.

Jonathan was married to the late Lucille Harmon Lowe for 45 years until her death in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Lola R. Cockrell. He was blessed with two children, John Mark Lowe (Wanda) of Irmo and Lynne Monse (John) of Huntsville, AL; four step-children, Fred Jason Cockrell (Susie), Natalie C. Baker, and Carla C. Trainor (Joe) of Prosperity, and Rita C. Dickert (Kyle) of Newberry. He has 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 10 step-grandchildren.

Services for Jonathan Chelsey Lowe Jr. will be held at 3pm on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Wightman United Methodist Church in Prosperity. Burial will be at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery immediately following the service. One hour prior to the service, the family will receive friends in the Wightman Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Mid-Carolina Middle School Jonathan C. Lowe Scholarship Fund, 7694 US Highway 76, Prosperity, SC 29127 or Wightman United Methodist Church, PO Box 376, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Active pall bearers will be Fred Cockrell, Kyle Dickert, Frank Harmon, Mike Hawkins, Daniel Monse, Matthew Monse, Joe Trainor, and Larry Wise.
