William Larry Barr, 70, of Newberry, won his battle with melanoma cancer with his loving family by his side Monday, May 27, 2013, at Hospice Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood.
Born on August 2, 1942, in Greenville, he was the son of the late William Paul and Sue Alice Pelfrey Barr. He served in the Intelligence School in the US Army and graduated Clemson University in 1964. Mr. Barr was retired after 43 years from the SC Forestry Commission where he was the Forest Protection Chief in the state regional office. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served as High Priest.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Haney Barr; daughters, Tara Lynn Barr (Larry) Stephens of Timmonsville and Andrea Leah Barr (David) White of Greenwood; grandchildren, Caleb, Hunter, Ethan and Brody; an aunt, Blanche Barr Pelfrey and uncle, Wallace Barr. Mr. Barr was predeceased by a sister, Polly Sue Barr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, May 30, 2013, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints presided by President Michael Shurtleff. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Disaster Relief Fund, 40 Hartford Heights, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
Active pallbearers will be Caleb White, Hunter White, Ethan White, Brody White, Jared Templin, Matthew Templin, Nathan Templin, Adam Templin, Grant Hawkins and Rhett Hawkins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Hawkins, Ed Cole, Lonnie Nelson, Paul Major, Lloyd Brigman, Jimmy Longshore, and Ken Waites.
