Lewis Virgil Ringer, 94, of Newberry, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 19, 2016, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on November 27, 1921, in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Henry David and Fannie Lominick Ringer. He was graduated from Newberry High School. In 1940, he began his career with the Newberry Electric Cooperative where he was the first lineman helping set poles and hang the wires to bring electricity for the first time to the homes of Newberry County residents. He retired in 1987 after 47 years as a line superintendent with NEC.

Lewis was a proud World War II Army veteran who served in the 30 th Division (Old Hickory) as it fought its way across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. As a member of the Signal Corps he remained just behind the front lines to help keep communications between the infantry companies during the Battle of the Bulge. He was preparing to embark on The Queen Mary for the Pacific Ocean Theater when the Japanese surrendered. His division was allowed to return to New York Harbor and was greeted with a fanfare as they passed the Statue of Liberty.

Lewis was a Lifelong member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church where he was a member of the Adult B Sunday School Class, the Joy Fellowship and formerly served on the Church Council and other committees. He was a 50-year member of the Newberry Amity Lodge # 87 AFM.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Ringer Cromer and son-in-law, Harry “Bubba” Cromer, Jr.; grandchildren, Fran Cromer (Hugh) Gray and Harry E. (Whitney) Cromer III; great-grandchildren, Tanner Moyd, Sara Kinard Moyd, Anna Gray, Connor Gray, Matthew Moyd, Catherine Moyd and Andrew Moyd, Julia Collins Cromer and Harrison Cromer. His beloved canine buddy, Bentley, was always by his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Helen Helms Ringer, sisters, Sara McDowell, Irene Lominack and brothers, Hubert Ringer and Homer Ringer.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, September 22, 2016, at St. Philip's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Amick. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home of Lynn and Bubba Cromer and will receive friends from 6:00- 8:00 pm Wednesday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Philip's Lutheran Church, 2461 St. Philip's Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Sonny Ringer, Reid Ringer, Keith Kibler, Larry Helms, John Cromer, Andy Lowrey and Chuck Counts.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Joy Fellowship and Adult B Sunday School Class of St. Philip's Lutheran Church.

The family would like to acknowledge special caregivers for their compassionate care: Dorene Nance, Ann Robinson, Antoine Diggs, Rick Abbott, the staff of Newberry Internal Medicine, Newberry County Memorial Hospital, Springfield Place, and Palmetto Health Hospice.
