Lola Rice Cockrell Lowe departed for her most amazing trip ever to be with our Lord on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. Born in Vero Beach, Florida on December 27, 1936, she was the daughter of Fred and Girtha Patterson Rice. She grew up in the Bush River area of Newberry County, and, after marrying John Wesley Cockrell, she made Prosperity her home. After his death in 1982, she devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. In 1997, she married Jonathan C. Lowe and enjoyed many years of companionship and travel with him until his death in 2011.
Lola, a retired nurse, worked at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home, but she used her compassionate nursing skills to be a caretaker to the whole community. Whether she was devoting her time to her church, Colony Evangelical Lutheran, volunteering for hospice or Manna House, or caring for someone in need, Lola used her kind and gentle spirit to help others.
Lola loved to travel. If the car door was open, Lola was getting in. She was a member of the Newberry Road Runners, treasuring those trips with her best friends, Larry and Barbara Wise. Lola cherished traveling with her children and grandchildren who called her the life of the party. She rarely missed a beach trip, ballgame, school event, or any activity in which her children and grandchildren participated.
Lola is survived by a son, Fred Jason (Susie) Cockrell of Prosperity, and three daughters, Natalie C. Baker and Carla C. (Joe) Trainor of Prosperity, and Rita C. (Kyle) Dickert of Newberry; along with a sister, Loewana Merrill of Clinton. Granny Lola treasured her grandchildren, Cole, Chandler, and Chase Dickert; John Wesley and Sam Trainor; Kaitlyn Slice; and Leanna and Jacob Cockrell.
Besides her mother, father, and two husbands, she was predeceased by a son, Raymond Boyd Cockrell, and two sisters, Anita R. Hill of Clinton and Patsy R. Ellis of Winston Salem, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Colony Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Afterward, the family will receive friends in the Crosson Fellowship Hall. Until then, the family is gathered at Lola’s home, 301 N.Main Street in Prosperity. Memorials may be made to Colony Evangelical Lutheran Church Bus Building Fund, 48 Colony Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
