Lola Corrie Young Mayer, 76, of Newberry died Monday, February 23, 2009 at her home. Born June 11, 1932 , she was the wife of Euston Hutto Mayer, Jr. Born and reared in Newberry, she was the daughter of Ralph Watson Young and Kathleen Dean Young.

Lola was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Cub Scout Denmother when her sons were Cub Scouts. She also taught Sunday School at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, where she was a member of the Miriam Circle . She was formerly employed by Southern Bell Telephone Co. as an operator in Columbia , the Diana Shop of Newberry, the Colonial (grocery) Store, Davis Oil Company (now Kunkle Oil Co.) and Newberry College . She attended the First Baptist Church of Newberry as a child, and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer all of her adult life.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph Watson Young and Kathleen Dean Young. She is survived by her husband Euston Hutto Mayer, Jr. of Newberry and three sons, Ralph Hutto Mayer and wife Karen Shamburg of Lexington , Bruce Young Mayer and wife Kathy Rothrock of Sumter and Dean Elbert Mayer of Myrtle Beach . She is also survived by eight grandchildren; Capt. Matthew Mayer, USAF, Mountain Home , ID ; Lt. Jonathan Mayer, SC Army National Guard, Lexington , SC ; and Kristen Mayer, Lexington , SC. Also, Allison Mayer Gainey and husband Tommy, as well as Kelly and Rachel Mayer of Sumter , and Brandon and Michael Mayer of Myrtle Beach . She has one sister, Annette Young Cox of Anniston, AL and nieces Penny Cox Betts and Toni Cox Vick both of Anniston , AL . Her sister-in-law, Martha Mayer Hooper and husband Harold of Prosperity, SC. Her nephews are Larry, Mike and Lee Hooper.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Caldwell Day. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry. The family will receive friends at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, PO Box 382 , Newberry , SC 29108 and/or Hospice Care of SC, 600 N. Wheeler Ave. , Prosperity , SC 29127

Active pallbearers: Tommy Gainey, Lee Hooper, Brandon Mayer and Matthew Mayer

Honorary pallbearers will be the caregivers of Hospice of SC.
