Marcia Parkes Coggins, 86, of Newberry, widow of James Francis Coggins, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Born on June 20, 1924, in Sydney, Australia, she was a daughter of the late Donnezetti B. Parkes and Sarah Svenson Parkes. Mrs. Coggins was educated in Sydney Australia and attended Anderson College. She was the former vice president and secretary of Newberry Broadcasting Company. She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Newberry Garden Club having served as president. Also, she was active in the Garden Club of S.C. as chairman of several committees. Marcia will be fondly remembered for her lovely voice with an Australian accent on WKDK especially with tales from Storyland and her rendition of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” each Christmas Eve.
She is survived by a son and his wife, James P. and Doris Coggins of Newberry; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie C. and Curtis Haltiwanger of Newberry, Elizabeth C. and Flynn Lambert of Greenville, Marcia C. and Durrett Lipscomb of Tallahassee, FL and Donna C. and Denton Burnette of Greenville; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris Haltiwanger, Ashley H. and Brian Fitzgerald, Jason C. and Amanda Haltiwanger, Jessica C. and Justin Dahman, Parkes B. and Meredith Coggins, Parkes Burnette and Will Burnette; great grandchildren, Caleb, Colin, Camdyn and Reese and a longtime devoted family friend, Carrie Ellis. Mrs. Coggins was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Mitch VanMetre. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Newberry Opera House Foundation, 1201 McKibben Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 497, Newberry, SC 29108 or Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
