Marion E. Wicker, 91, of Newberry, widower of Naomi Crapps Wicker, died October 8, 2011 at White Oak Manor.
Born on June 12, 1920, in Pomaria, he was a son of the late Ernest Oliver and Mary Viola Graham Wicker. He was a graduate of Bush River High School and was a World War II Army veteran. While serving in North Africa in 1943, he was captured and became a Prisoner of War. He was held prisoner in Italy, Munich, Germany, and in Poland. He was released in April 1945. He was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a member of Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder. He was an active member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War.
Mr. Wicker is survived by a son, Edwin E. Wicker and his wife Tina of Newberry; a daughter, Karen Wicker Solomon and her husband Ferris of Ponte Vedra, FL; sisters, Rebecca Gardner of Newberry, Elizabeth Ruff of Irmo, and Sunie Mills of Newberry; a brother, James Wicker of Newberry; grandchildren, Amy Caldwell, Edwin Wicker, Kerri Clark, Colleen Newell, and Ferris Solomon, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Haden and Riley Caldwell, Wilder Newell, and McKenna Solomon. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Herman, and Richard Wicker and by a sister, Mabel Gomes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Monday, October 10, 2011 in the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lawrence Peebles and the Rev. Dr. Mitchell VanMetre. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:30 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
