Mark Wheeler Bowers, 62, of Prosperity, died Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born on July 18, 1954, in Newberry, he was a son of Marian Sligh Bowers and the late Oscar Wheeler Bowers. He attended Midlands Technical College and was the owner of Bowers BP. Mark was an active member of Wightman United Methodist Church where he was involved with the United Methodist Men, formerly coached the church softball team, was involved with the cooking committee and served on numerous other committees over the years. He was a volunteer with the Prosperity Fire Department where he served as Chief for ten years. Mark loved life and greatly enjoyed his adventures sailing in the Caribbean, supporting the Carolina Gamecocks and boating on Lake Murray and Lake Wateree.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Berley Bowers; his mother, Marian Bowers of Prosperity; daughter, Brittin Bowers (Martin) Friar of Prosperity; son, Bryan Bowers of Prosperity; brothers, Douglas (Cleo) Bowers and George (Tina) Bowers both of Prosperity; sister, Amy Bowers of Prosperity; grandchildren, Logan Friar and Bethany Friar.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brian Rainwater, Rev. Jimmy Counts and Rev. Jeff O'Dell. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church, PO Box 376, Prosperity, SC 29127.
Active pallbearers will be Gordon Eargle, Keith Kibler, David Beaty, Randy Suber, Bill Hendrix, and Lee Foster.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Prosperity Fire Department.
