Mrs. Mary Ellen Keaton Griffin, 90, the widow of Armour J. Griffin died at home in Pomaria on Saturday, March 30, 2013. Born November 24, 1922 in Anderson County to Earl L. and Sadie M. Keaton, she was the oldest of five children. After earning an associate of arts degree from Anderson Junior College, she taught elementary school throughout World War II. In 1945 she married Armour J. Griffin and moved to Pomaria where she resided for the rest of her life. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for more than 60 years during which time she taught Sunday School and VBS and was a member of WELCA and the Golden Agers’ group.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Mike) Ware and Linda Griffin, both of Pomaria and one son, Randy (Lynn) Griffin of Lone Star. She is also blessed with four grandchildren, Chris Griffin, Carson Ware, Amy Griffin, and Bucky Ware and three great-grand children, Savannah Corley, Maggie Corley, and AJ Ware. In addition to her offspring, she has one surviving brother, Joseph (Ceylon) Keaton, one brother-in-law Bright (Essie) Griffin, four sister-in-laws, several nieces and nephews, and many, many friends!
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 48 years AJ Griffin, a son Earl J. Griffin, and three sisters Hazel Linder, Earline Morris, and Sarah McCurry.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. Kathy Harris. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 – 6:30 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 209 New Hope Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.
Throughout her long life she remained faithful to God, and during her final illness she was given many previews of what heavenly life will be like.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Carroll Pinner, III for his excellent care in her treatment, Barbara “BB” Brooks for her loyalty and help, Blue Ridge Hospice workers Susan, Dee, Shaun, Mrs. Eva and Paulette; and Debra and Geraldine of Angel Care of Newberry. Most of all our thanks go to Pastor Kathy Harris for her comfort and spiritual guidance over the past three years.
Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Bonner, Jay Gibson, Rodney Griffin, Rusty Griffin, Tommy Griffiin and Joey Keaton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Carroll Pinner, III, Barbara “BB” Brooks, Blue Ridge Hospice workers, and Angel Care workers - Debra McClurkin and Geraldine Thomas.
