Mildred Wise Baker of Newberry, SC, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Mrs. Baker was born on September 12, 1930 in Newberry, SC. She is the daughter of the late Jacob Harvey Wise and Eunice Eva Shealy Wise.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years William Ralph Baker, her sons, Phillip R. Baker (Robin) of Newberry, SC, Eugene W. Baker (Ellen) of Pomaria, SC, a brother, Carroll Wise of Newberry, SC; sisters, Rachel Wicker of Newberry, SC, and Dannette Smith, and Sue Counts both of Kinards, SC; 7 grandchildren Michelle Williams (Joseph), Amber Parker (David), Tammy Hood (Joseph), Maria Torres (Will), Angela Baker, Ricky Baker and predeceased by Amy Baker, 11 great grandchildren Ari Riddle, Evan Williams, Ethan Williams, Zury Parker, Marshall Parker, Amy Hood, Mikala Hood, Claire Hood, Sara Hood, Cadence Torres and Kylee Torres. She was predeceased by a sister, Vermelle McDowell.
Mrs. Baker graduated from Bush River High School in 1947 and graduated from the Business Department of Newberry College in 1948. She was employed with Newberry Electric Cooperative May 1948-October 1952. She was granted a leave of absence to join her husband in service at Fort Hood, Texas. She was later employed by Citizens Home Insurance Company and Newberry High School. She returned to Newberry Electric Cooperative on April 29, 1969 and retired on January 15, 1993.
Mrs. Baker was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She served as a weekday church school teacher, Sunday school teacher, was a Life Member of the WELCA, was a Life Member of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She served on the Worship and Music Committee at St. James Lutheran Church for years. She was a member of the St. James choir. She enjoyed participating in the Easter and Christmas cantatas with the Newberry Community Choir.
Visitation will be held at McSwain Evans Funeral Home on Friday, April 19, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be at St. James Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2:00 pm with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Services will be officiated by Rev. Rodney Gunter. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
