Myra Addy

d. December 3, 2015

MYRA FELLERS ADDY, 92, widow of Russell C. Addy, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015. She was born on February 27, 1923, in the O'Neal Community, south of Prosperity SC. She was the youngest child of the late Alma Connelly Fellers and Cecil E. Fellers.

Myra is survived by a nephew, Cecil Ringer, and his wife Leigh of Boiling Springs SC. She is also survived by a niece, Dianne Ivey, husband Earl, and sons Keith and Kevin (Tonya) of Lexington SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clay Howard Fellers, formerly of Columbia; her sister, Parnelle Fellers Ringer, formerly of Newberry; and her niece, Sandra Fellers Reid Knowlton, formerly of Southern Pines, NC.

She attended O'Neal School, but moved with her family to the Mt. Bethel-Garmany Community of Newberry in 1930 as construction on Lake Murray threatened the family's farm. She continued school at Mt. Bethel-Garmany School, and graduated from Newberry High School. She began her work career at the lunch counter of Rose's Dime Store at age 15, then later worked at B. C. Moore store before beginning her training as an Optometrist's Assistant. She worked some 67 years in this profession, first for Dr. Lynch in Newberry, then for Dr. James C. Atkison and finally for Drs Branch and Stafford, retiring in 2012. She was known for helping choose and adjust eye glasses for many of Newberry County's residents over the years.

She became a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church upon her family's move to the Mt. Bethel-Garmany Community and remained a member there until her passing. Over her years at Lebanon, she served as Sunday School teacher for the kindergarten class and later the Elementary 1-3 class, the Elementary 4-6 class, and the Mary Cromer Bible Class (adult ladies). She was a member of the choir, served on the Administrative Board/Council, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and in many other capacities.

During their nearly 50 years of marriage, she and "Rutt" worked with children and youth for much of their lives, both at Lebanon Church and in the community. They were the adult sponsors of "The Reality Seekers" community youth choir from 1972 through 1978, having chaperoned all the choir tours by this group. They continued to chaperone choir tours for their nephew's youth choir, "Believers Because...," in Union SC until Russell's death. She continued to chaperone choir/mission tours for several more years.

Myra served for many years as the Memorial Chairman for the American Heart Association for Newberry County and for the American Cancer Society's Newberry Chapter (she, herself a cancer survivor). She also served on the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Volunteer Board. She was named the Newberry Rotary Club's "Layperson of the Year" in 1992, and was awarded the Newberry Exchange Club's "Book of Golden Deeds" in 1997.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 11:00 am at Lebanon United Methodist Church, Newberry, by the Rev. Steve Durham and Mr. Cecil Ringer. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the church. Burial will be in the Rosemont Cemetery of Newberry SC.
