Myrtle Long

L. Myrtle Long, 96, of Newberry, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 12, 1917, in Newberry, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Werts and Tochie Cobb Long. Miss Long was a registered nurse who worked in New Jersey, Florida and South Carolina. She began working in 1949 with the Greenville General Hospital where she served as the supervisor of OB/GYN and the Newborn Nursery until her retirement in 1980. She most recently worked at the Newberry College Thrift Shop. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, DAR, and U.C.D. Miss Long was also a member of the American Red Cross, S.C. Nursing Association, S.C. League of Nursing and the American College of OB/GYN.

She is survived by nephews, Thomas A. Yates and Doyle E. Yates; great-nephew, Jeffery Yates, great-niece, Lisa Yates, a niece-in-law, Leslie Eike Yates and longtime friends, Donnie and Fran Hall and Al and Jonelle Morrison . Miss Long was predeceased by sisters, Sara Margaret Long Yates, Edna Long and Lois Long, a brother, Oscar Doyle Long and a nephew, Oscar Long Yates.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 pm Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Richard Goldie and Rev. Kem Thomas. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1254 Glenn Street, Ext., Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Nursing Services at Greenville Hospital Systems, 701 Grove Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. Clarence Easley, Dr. Eddie Ellison, Dr. Tom Gailey, Dr. David Smith, Bobby Nichols, Larry Swygert, Dr. Elmer Long and Troy Bowers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Al and Jonelle Morrison, Donnie and Fran Hall, Rita Thomas, Joe and Mary McDonald.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Newberry Hospital for their loving care.
