Nelda Eargle Jay

Nelda Eargle Jay, 88, of Newberry, widow of Houseal G. Jay, died Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on June 16, 1928, in Saluda, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Miller and Geneva Summer Eargle. She was a graduate of Newberry College and received a Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina. She was a retired Librarian with the Newberry County Public Schools. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, The Thursday Night Bridge Club, and the Nosegay Garden Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Stewart Jay Layman and her husband Sonny of Newberry; a son, Christopher Arthur Jay and his wife Janada of Hodges; 4 grandchildren, Lauren Jay, Brian Jay, Nick Layman, and Luke Layman; and a great-grandson, Dalton Bennett.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 am Monday, April 10, 2017 in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will be at her residence 1320 Summer Street where they will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Hal Kohn Memorial Library, 1100 Friend Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
