John Palmer Shealy, Sr, of Pomaria, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Born on January 23, 1938, in Pomaria, SC, he was the son of the late Roy Palmer Shealy and Carrie Lou Kinard Shealy. He graduated from Pomaria High School and began his lifelong career as a dairy farmer.
Palmer had a passion for farming, gardening, and fishing. He enjoyed watching his garden flourish each year. Many vegetables were sold and given away to family and friends. Each Christmas, Palmer and Gloria made their famous peanut brittle from the peanuts that they grew from their garden. Friends and family looked forward to this Christmas delight.
Palmer also enjoyed inviting family and friends to many barbeques and fish fry suppers which he held in his party building that his friend named P.J's (Palmer's and Jean's).
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Gloria Jean Berley Shealy; daughter, Angie Bedenbaugh (Gerald); son, John P. Shealy, Jr. (Phillip); grandchildren, Julie Clary (Hal), Garrett Bedenbaugh (Melanie) and five great-grandchildren, Emma and Connor Clary; Finley, Lillian and Hudson Bedenbaugh; a sister, JoAnn Pollack; a nephew, Todd Davis, nieces, Mitzi Craps (Donnie) and Jan Smith (Alan); a great nephew, Chase Smith and a great niece, Kate Smith.
Many thanks are extended to the Pomaria Rescue Squad and J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home staff for the care given to Palmer.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 am Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by Pastor Arden Hallman. The family will receive family and friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
