Pastor Vernon Lee Koon, Jr., 70, of Newberry, went home on Monday, December 6, 2021, to be with his Lord and Savior who he told everybody about.

Born on April 27, 1951, in Newberry, he was the son of the late Vernon Lee Koon, Sr. and Pauline Crumpton Koon. He served in the S.C. National Guard and worked for over 30 years in management with Food Lion. In 1986 he founded the Newberry Christian Academy where he served as administrator. Pastor Koon was a 2002 graduate of Piedmont Technical College. His greatest work was serving as a pastor and he was the founder of the Old Time Holiness Mission.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maxine Hilley Koon; daughters, Tammy Gibson (Wayne), Tracy Hawkins, Trudy Wilkes (Mark) all of Newberry and Tiffany Adams (Philip) of Raeford, NC; mother-in-law, Hazel Hilley of Newberry; sister, Mona Taylor of Newberry; fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, December 10, 2021, at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Mark Wilkes and Pastor Ricky Harris. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Old Time Holiness Mission, 2004 Colony Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Blake Hawkins, Hunter Gibson, Austin Hawkins, Luke Wilkes, Adam Wilkes, Marvin Sweat and Thomas Miller.
