Paul A. Dewey, 81, of Chapin, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born on May 25, 1928, in Ripley, NY, he was a son of the late Arthur A. and Ethel Harris Dewey. Mr. Dewey was a graduate of Black River High School. After high school graduation he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Following his military tour of duty he obtained his bachelor degree from Indiana University and did graduate work at the University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston.

Mr. Dewey was a dedicated employee of Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company for 34 years retiring in 1985 as a Vice President, and then began a series of adventures that included owning and operating Columbia Tours and Convention Services, collecting and dealing in antiques, and teaching traditional students, special education, and adult learners. He was recognized as Outstanding Mentor by A.C. Flora High School. Mr. Dewey was also an original member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin where he served in a number of roles over the years and remained an active and devoted member.

Surviving is his wife, Margaret Dewey; a son, Joseph Dewey; step-daughters, Leslie Burkeand husband David, Jennifer Williams, and Janet Hair and husband Kevin; grandchildren, James Metze, Jr. and wife Julie, Andrew Metze, and Jennifer Dewey; step-grandchildren, Heather Mann and husband Curt, Jessica Williams, Anna Burke and partner Brent Davis, and Sarah Burke; great-grandchildren, Marissa Mann, James Metze III(Trey), and Dalton Davis; sisters, Katie Hudson and husband John, Virginia Downs and husband Jim; a brother, Steve Dewey and wife Lora; and a son-in law, James(Jim) Metze, Sr. Mr. Dewey was predeceased by a daughter, Renee Metze and a step-daughter, Linda Higgins.

The family would like to give special thanks to Melanie Glenn for her devotion and care. Thanks are also offered to the oncology nursing team and hospice staff of Palmetto Health Richland for their care and support, and to Father Phil Purser along with the members of St. Francis for their steadfast love.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, PO Box 265, Chapin, SC 29036.
