Paul W. Hughey, Sr.

Paul Winslow Hughey, Sr., 88, of Prosperity, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Springfield Place in Newberry.

Born on November 6, 1925, in Columbia, he was the fourth of six children born to the late Marvin Moore and Sadie Elizabeth Hutchison Hughey. Mr. Hughey attended the public schools of Columbia and the University of South Carolina and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He retired from Fort Jackson and the S.C. Department of Mental Health. He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Columbia prior to moving to the Fairview Community of Newberry County at which time he transferred his membership to Macedonia Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge # 402 AFM.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Moore Hughey whom he married May 21, 1949; children, Paul W. “Win” Hughey, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda and Paula Jean Hughey Thies and her husband Paul; grandchildren, Paul W. “Trey” Hughey III, Hannah Elizabeth Hughey and Dillon Aubrey Thies.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 am – 12 Noon on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Macedonia Lutheran Church. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon in the church conducted by the Rev. Randall Derrick and Rev. Frank Lyerly. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Macedonia Lutheran Church Family Life Center, 49 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127 or to the charity of one's choice.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Hughey, Stanley Hughey, Marvin Hughey, Dillon Thies, Trey Hughey, Eddie Shull, and Danny Walker.
