Philip "Phil" Bouknight

Philip M. “Phil” Bouknight, 77, of Newberry widower of Joyce K. Bouknight passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025, at home.

Born in Newberry on September 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Wilbur Oneal Bouknight and Mabel Wilhite Bouknight.

He was a 1965 graduate of Newberry High School. He served 25 years with the Newberry Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant, and then spent 12 years as a State Constable, and a Master Mason with Amity Lodge 87 in Newberry, SC. He was named an honorary firefighter by the Newberry Fire Department. After retirement, he started and ran Phil Bouknight Home Repairs for many years before retiring again to enjoy spending time with his wife, Joy, Children, and grandchildren. He was a long-time member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, helped cook many turkey stews, and cooked for Salkehatchie members. He enjoyed going fishing any time he could, he was a member of the Newberry Pistol Club until Joy’s passing. He still enjoyed teaching and taking family members shooting.

He is survived by his children, Jodi (Benji) Sease, Wilbur (Katrina) Bouknight, and Grandchildren, Dylan, Kadence (Zachary), Gaines, Tazmyne (Isabella), Braydon, “baby dog” Kira, and special friends Steve Bailey, Marvin Miller, and Kathy Davenport

Phil was predeceased by his parents, and a son, Christopher Neal Bouknight.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2025 in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jimmy Counts and by the Rev. Jeff O'Dell. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers: Micheal Kennedy, Jay Brogdon, Caitlin Branch, Dalton Reynolds, Jeremy Jackson, Dustin Shaw.

Honorary pallbearers: Steve Bailey, Marvin Miller, Danny Remion, Bart Cochcroft, Ricky Attaway, Eric Miller, Roy McClurkin, Calvin “CD” Davis, Officers of the Newberry Police Department, previous coworkers, and Newberry Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to a church or charity of one's choice.
