Ralph M. Schumpert, 84, of Newberry, died Friday, December 3, 2010, at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born on May 5, 1926, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Jacob McDuffie and Connie Ophelia Derrick Schumpert. Mr. Schumpert was a World War II Army veteran and retired from American Fiber and Finishing after working for many years at all three of the cotton mills in Newberry. He was a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church, a former member of the American Legion Post #24 and a former volunteer fireman of Friendly Fire Department.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Patricia Metts Schumpert; a son, Metts Schumpert of Newberry; a daughter, Harriet (Kenneth) Waites of Newberry; grandsons, Jason (Becky) Schumpert, Casey (Robin) Waites and Jeff (Mandy) Waites; great-grandchildren, Hayes Waites, Abbie Schumpert, Chandler Waites and Ashlyn Waites. Mr. Schumpert was predeceased by a daughter, Connie Schumpert, great-grandsons, Joe and Peyton Waites and all of his siblings, Guy, George and Ray Schumpert, Allene Kibler, Louise Rister, Jeanette Cannon and Doris Rikard.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2010, at Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Floyd Sides. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at his residence, 1212 Keroes Avenue, Newberry and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Waites, 2715 Collinswood Drive, Newberry and they will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
