Richard E. Bowers, 77, of Prosperity, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born on April 28, 1935, in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Elbert W. and Pearl Dominick Bowers. He was retired from the S.C. National Guard and also from Liberty Life Insurance after 35 years of service. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Asbury Bedenbaugh Sunday School. Mr. Bowers served on the Prosperity Town Council for 20 years was a member of the Prosperity Civitan Club, the Prosperity Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He was a Mason and Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Murphy Bowers; sons, Thomas H. (Debbie Bowers) Murphy of Prosperity, Randy H. (fianc é , Nell Freeman) of Pomaria and Terry J. (Shannon Fisher) Murphy of Prosperity; sisters, Gay Davenport of Newberry and Joyce B. Morse of Pomaria; grandchildren, Michael B. Murphy, Matthew H. Murphy, Kristie A. Murphy, Kayla B. Murphy, Madyson M. Murphy, Brooke Smith (Josh) Keistler, Brent (Shelly) Smith and C.J. Freeman. Mr. Bowers was predeceased by granddaughters, Kortney Brooke Murphy and Brittany Kayla Murphy, a sister, Edna B. Long and brothers, David W. Bowers and Ralph G. Bowers.

Funeral services will be at Friday, January 25, 2013, 3:30 pm at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dean Lollis. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church, PO Box 376, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Active pallbearers will be Matthew Murphy, Michael Murphy, Brent Smith, David Bowers, Jr., Corey Graham, Glenn L. Hamm, C.J. Freeman and Jimmie Lee Shaw.

Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Rivers, Glenn Hamm, Ronnie Cromer, Cornelius Michael Glasgow, Frank Sligh, Lee Shaw, Dr. Carroll Pinner III, Tom Easterby, nieces and nephews, and members of the Asbury Bedenbaugh Sunday School Class.
