Richard Koon

Richard O’Neal Koon, 89, of Prosperity, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Born on September 19, 1934, in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Fred O’Neal Koon and Zilla Garrett Koon Inman.  He was an Army veteran who served in Germany.  Mr. Koon retired in 1994 from the SC Highway Patrol as a Lieutenant with the Transport Police. He was a partner in the former Mid Carolina Parts and Salvage.

He was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council.  He was a retired board member of the Newberry Electric Cooperative. He was a Mason and Shriner.

Mr. Koon enjoyed fishing, was a vintage car enthusiast and a man of many trades.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Freida Shealy Koon; a daughter, Kathey (Neal) Eargle of Prosperity; a son-in-law, Moe Baddourah of Columbia; sisters, Mary (Jim) Hunter of Columbia, Jo Nicholson of Gilbert and Peg Garnard of California; brothers, John (Darnell) Koon of Irmo and James Walter “Bud” (Marlene) Koon of Prosperity; grandchildren, Reece O’Neal Eargle, Seth Bryan Eargle, Kallie Elise Eargle, Zeke Baddourah and Eli Baddourah.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Angie Baddourah and a brother, Bobby Koon.

A memorial service will be held at 9:00 am Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Hundley.  The family will receive friends following the service.
