Rion Carson Price, Sr., 89, of Newberry, died Monday, March 17, 2014, at his residence.

Born on June 22, 1924, in Newberry County he was the son of the late Claude Crosson and Maybelle Rikard Price. He graduated Newberry High School on June 1, 1943 and the following day went to Fort Jackson to join the Army. He served in the European theater during World War II in the 821 st Military Police Company. He retired from the S.C. National Guard in Newberry as a Chaplain's Assistant. He also retired from American Fiber and Finishing -Kendall Company, Oakland Plant. Mr. Price was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Newberry where he served as an Elder. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Newberry Opera House.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Vanderford Price; sons, Rion Price, Jr. and Tommy Price; a daughter, Amy Price; grandchildren, Devin and Josie Price; brother-in-law, Donald Vanderford; niece, Mrs. David (Gwen) Cook; nephew, Doug Vanderford, several great nieces and nephews. Mr. Price was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Juanita) Hitt and his step-mother, Mrs. Vinnie Kate Leitzsey Price.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Tim Erskine and Rev. Jeff O'Dell. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00- 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3225 Sunset Blvd., Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169 or to the Newberry Opera House, 1201 McKibben Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family extends a special thanks to Hospice of SC for the kind, professional care given to our entire family by their dedicated staff.

Active pallbearers will be Phillip Cook, Allen Cox, Robby Hentz, Jim Pitts, Chuck Price, Doug Vanderford and Jeff Wilkie.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Longshore, Billy Rikard, Jean Williamson, Gene Wicker, Yoder Bedenbaugh, James Hill, Richard Lominick, Robert Renwick, Don Ringer, Clyde Brown, Nick Davenport and Jerry Davenport.
