Ruby McCartha Lake

Ruby McCartha Lake of Prosperity passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at the Saluda Nursing Center.  

She was 89 years old having been born on January 3, 1935 in Prosperity. She was a daughter of the late W.J. and Mattie Mills McCartha.  

Mrs. Lake was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Chapin. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. 

She is survived by her husband, Alton E. Lake to whom she was married for 71 years; her children, Janice (Benny) Hallman of Chapin, Tony (Doris) Lake and Kevin (Connie) Lake both of Saluda; her six grandchildren, Kenny Hallman, Deena (Hannon) Bedenbaugh, Courtney Lake, Jessica (Eduardo) Reyes, Brent (Kalyn) Lake and Jordan Lake. She has seven great-grandchildren which are Adon, Camden and Edith Mae Hallman, Logan Reyes, Jacob, Mary Joyce “M.J.” and Oakley Lake; a sister, Mary Frances Hembree of Newberry. 

Mrs. Lake was predeceased by a sister, Lila Leopard, a brother, J.C. McCartha, a brother-in-law, Dan Hembree and a sister-in-law, Lucy McCartha. 

Funeral services will be held on her 90th birthday on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 3:00 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church with a graveside service following in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry. 

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, SC 29036. 

Active pallbearers will be Brent Lake, Jordan Lake, Eduardo Reyes, Kenny Hallman, Hannon Bedenbaugh and Steven Lake. 

The family would like to thank the Saluda Nursing Center staff for the great care they gave to Mrs. Ruby.
