Ruth Werts Chapman, 96, of Newberry, affectionately known as ”Little Grandmama”, widow of Rufus Virgil Chapman, died Saturday, September 7, 2013, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Born on April 2, 1917, in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Middleton Nay and Julia Inez Koon Werts. She was retired from Damon International and was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of which she was the oldest member.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by a daughter, Peggy C. (Roscoe) Bedenbaugh of Newberry; a brother, Wallace (Dot) Werts of Elloree; grandchildren, Karman (Wendy) Bedenbaugh of Hickory Tavern, Bradley Bedenbaugh of Newberry and Aaron (Wingki) Bedenbaugh of Bristol, CT; great-grandchildren, Henry and Ella Bedenbaugh of Bristol, CT and Brandon and Bryton Cromer of Hickory Tavern and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen Werts and brothers, Clyde Werts, Horace Werts and Getson Werts.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Brent Nichols and Rev. Dr. Linda Dunn. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Restoration Fund, c/o First Community Bank, PO Box 417, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Ludy Werts, Dana Werts, Terry Werts, Benjie Chapman, Ben Chapman, Doyle Shealy and Rickey Chapman.
