Ruth Willingham Yon, 93, of Newberry, widow of Edward “Ed” Pearson Yon, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Born on September 3, 1920, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Ambrous Olin and Alda Miller Willingham. Mrs. Yon retired from Damon International after over 35 years of service. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active in Sunday School, a member of WELCA, a member of the Leisure Club, the Altar Guild and on the Evangelism Committee. She was a faithful church member that loved her “church family” as much as her own family.
Mrs. Yon was known as “Nanny” and was as a loving and loyal mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who was always doing for others. She put the needs of everyone else before her own. She was an excellent cook and was known for her cakes and especially her “doll cakes.” She loved to crochet and many of her crocheted blankets are enjoyed by family and friends.
Mrs. Yon is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy H. Yon; sisters, Helen Smith and Myra Berley of Newberry and Mary (Clarence) Cook of Westminister, CO; a brother, Ted (Marilyn) Willingham of Newberry; grandchildren, Amanda Ruth Yon, Amy (Barry) Shealy, Angela Erhardt, Patti Anne Yon, Eddie (Kelly) Yon and Robbie Yon; great-grandchildren, Joshua Erhardt, Jessica Erhardt, Jenna Shealy, Jacob Shealy, Josie Price, Kaylin Yon, Zane Yon, Joseph Samples, Chris Yon and Marcus (Jessica) Samples; great-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Ella Anne Samples. She was predeceased by sons, Robert Yon and Thomas Earl Yon and siblings, Joy Thomas, Anne Willingham, Olin Willingham, Earl Willingham and John Willingham.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Faith Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eddie Miller. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 1505 Wilson Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
