Sandra Bodie

Sandra Long Bodie, 78, of Newberry passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at her home.

Born on December 1st, 1944 in Silverstreet, she was the daughter of the late Burley Sligh Long and Irene Blair Long.  She graduated from Palmer College in Columbia. She worked as secretary at Gallman Elementary for 28 years (1978-2006).  After retirement she became a volunteer at Newberry Memorial Hospital and Newberry Opera House.  She loved playing games, bingo, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, boating on Lake Murray and shopping with family and friends.  

She and her husband were third generation Newberrians and married for 60 years.  They met at Rikard's Grocery, formerly located on Nance Street in front of the old high school while she was buying ice cream salt.  They enjoyed traveling and spending time at the lake, beach, and mountains.  They also liked seeking out quaint seafood restaurants and especially enjoyed catfish Fridays at Bill and Fran's. 

Sandra was a member of the Lutheran Church of Redeemer.  She is survived by her husband John Calvin Bodie, daughter Laura Bodie Breckenridge, son Craig McClellan Bodie, brother Walter Burley Long, and three grandchildren, Darcee, Campbell and Thomas.

Family, friends and anyone who knew Sandra will miss her intellect, confidence, dedication and sweet caring nature.  The family is very appreciative of the extensive support and prayers from friends and neighbors. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Matthew Titus The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center of the church.

Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association Ride to End Alzheimer’s campaign.  Her son Craig cycles from upstate South Carolina to Charleston in three days (212 total miles) to promote Alzheimer's research.  Each year during the first day's conclusion in Newberry, Sandra would host the team for dinner and fellowship.  Link: 2023 Ride to End ALZ - South Carolina: Craig Bodie | Ride to End ALZ | Alzheimer's Association
