Steve "Byrd" William Smith

Steve “Byrd” William Smith, 68, of Newberry, joined his wife in Heaven on August 19, 2024.

Born on January 27, 1956, he was the son of the late Benny Smith and Ethilene “Kelly” Phillips Oliver. He was a retired food broker and after retirement, he enjoyed booking bird hunts for others. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Newberry. Byrd was determined that his children would have a better life than he did growing up. He worked hard and played hard. He was the life of the party, a determined business man, an incredible hunter, a generous spirit, and an amazing friend. If, by chance, there's any such thing as beach music in Heaven, Susan and Byrd are once again dancing the night away.

He is survived by his daughters, Kayce Smith Rutledge and Megan Smith Zepeda and her husband Lou, all of Travelers Rest; and grandchildren, Garrett, Haley, Audrey, and Judson Rutledge and Landon and Remi Zepeda. His son-in-law, Ray Rutledge, made it to Heaven exactly six months before him.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Thursday, August 22, 2024 at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Albert Allen. He will be laid to rest in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
