Sue Hartman

Cynthia Sue Merchant Hartman, 74, of Prosperity, widow of Charles Richard Hartman, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Born on August 16, 1949, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Norris L. and Jennie Ballard Merchant. Sue obtained an associate degree from Piedmont Technical College and attended Newberry College. She retired from Prosperity-Rikard Elementary School as a teaching assistant and bus driver. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served as the Sunday School Superintendent, served on the church council and worked with the annual Vacation Bible School.

Sue is survived by a son, Barry (Wanda) Hartman of Prosperity; sisters, Brenda Amick of Prosperity and Donna (Mike) Hall of Newberry; granddaughter, Meghan (Kellsey) Hartman Bryant and her mother-in-law, Faye Hartman.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jane Mitcham. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00- 8:00 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, PO Box 188, Prosperity, SC 29127 or to the Newberry County Council on Aging Adult Day Care, 1300 Hunt Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Alan Kennington, Mike Hall, Bryan Hall, Hayden Hall and Hunter Hall.

Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Prosperity-Rikard Elementary School.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff of J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home and Tradition Hospice for their loving care to Sue.
