Terry Cotney

d. November 3, 2021

Terry Lee Cotney passed away on November 2, 2021. His loving heart left a beacon of light for all in the community and a positive impact on many lives because of his deep desire to help others and serve God.  He followed that prompting and founded The Freedom and Hope Foundation. Terry wanted to show his gratitude to America's heroes, especially the ones wounded while fighting overseas.  Freedom and Hope have become an established retreat providing a getaway with lodging, fishing, and hunting activities as recreational therapy for wounded military, both active duty and veterans, and for children with a life-threatening illness. There's also a Christmas tree inside the lodge that stays up all year round, because "It's always Christmas at Freedom and Hope."

He was preceded in death by his parents J.D. and Thelma Bates Cotney. He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Carol Cotney. He never missed a day bringing her flowers. The two were inseparable and lived life fully, with much laughter, and days on end building upon the foundation. Terry was also a devoted father and loved his children and grandchildren very much; Daughters, Michelle Cotney Crump (Troy), Sheilah Dixon (David), Sons, Troy Hughes, Kelley Hughes (Tammy), Cliff Hughes (Tammy), thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and brother Waco Cotney, sisters Patricia McDonald (Billy) and Joan Moss (Don).

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 1:00 pm, at Dutch Fork Baptist Church; 3517 Dreher Shoals Road Irmo, SC  29063. Burial to follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
