The Christopher M. McManus Family, Greenville

Funeral services for The McManus Family of Greenville, SC, Christopher M McManus, MD (46), Stacey Dickert McManus (46), Meghan Alexandra (17) and Connor Michael (14) who perished together Sunday, July 7, 2013, in a plane crash, Soldotna, Alaska will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Wiles Chapel on the Campus of Newberry College. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service in Smeltzer Hall at Newberry College.

The McManus Family was much loved by their families, friends and neighbors. They were active and worshiped together at Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, participated in many sports and family activities, and loved to travel together. They were a beautiful family, loved life, adventure, and the great outdoors.

The family was preceded in death by Chris’ father, Lawrence F McManus, Sr, MD. They are survived by Stacey’s parents, Johnnie and Rachel Dickert, brother Kyle (and Rita Cockrell) Dickert, and nephews, Cole, Chandler and Chase, all of Newberry SC; Chris’ mother, Kathleen O’Connor McManus of Brevard, NC, brother Lawrence F McManus Jr (Pamela A Nielsen and children Elizabeth, Thomas and Michael) of Chapel Hill, NC, and sisters Kathleen McManus (and David M) Furukawa (and son William) of Atlanta, and Debra McManus (and Steven J) Iacono (and daughter Jennifer) of Irmo, SC. The extended McManus and Dickert families include numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The McManus family, along with the Melet Antonakos family (Melet, Kimberly, Olivia, Mills and Ana) who accompanied them in life and death, will be memorialized together at Christ Church Episcopal, 10 North Church Street, Greenville SC. A Youth Candlelight Memorial will be celebrated Thursday, July 11 at 7:00pm-9:00pm, and a Community Memorial Service celebrated Friday, July 12 at 11:00am. Memorial gifts may be made in the McManus name to the USC School of Medicine Greenville Scholarship Fund (Office of Philanthropy and Partnership, 300 E McBee Ave, Ste 200, Greenville, SC 29601), South Carolina Donate Life or the Ronald McDonald House.

Christopher M McManus, MD

Chris came to know early in adulthood that family matters most. A generous, compassionate and giving man, Chris spent his time with his family: leading Cub and Boy Scout troops, aiding in coaching sports; leading adventurous vacation getaways, and always being available to Meghan and Connor. He was a wonderful husband and loving and generous son.

Chris was an avid outdoorsman: hiking, hunting, boating. . He participated in many shooting tournaments. This fall, Chris was to be awarded the coveted Order of the Arrow for his work and contributions to Boy Scouting.

Professionally, Dr. McManus was a nationally recognized and board certified Interventional Radiologist with the University Medical Group Radiology / Greenville Radiology. He has practiced in Greenville, SC since 1999. In 2011, he was distinguished by being the youngest physician to be inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Dr. McManus also held Board Certifications from the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Radiology, the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, and the American Board of Radiology division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Dr. McManus was graduated Cum Laude from the College of Charleston in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with emphasis in Biochemistry; and Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine with a Medical Doctorate. He completed a four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University in 1997, where he was Chief Resident from 1996-97; and a Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Bowman Gray in 1998. He was awarded the 1997 Radiology Faculty Award for Superior Scholarship and Potential as a Radiologist, Resident Class of 1997. He sat on the American Association of Chief Residents in Radiology National Steering Committee and was the Executive Chair Representative to the American College of Radiology.

Numerous other honors and awards were bestowed upon him throughout his schooling and career, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and multiple scholarships during Medical School; and the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and the Highly Distinguished Faculty Honors in Biology award in college. He was a member of many professional organizations in addition to his board certifications including the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Chris held many leadership positions in the professional and civic organizations, including: all SC State Chapter of the American College of Radiology positions leading to his being Chapter President 2009-2011. He was the current Chair, Greenville Health System Practioner Health Committee, and the Medical Staff Immediate Past President of the GHS Medical Executive Committee; and Vice Chair of the Department of Radiology. Chris was most proud of his being the Assistant Scoutmaster of Connor’s Boy Scouts of America Troop 9 since 2010, and Cub Scout Den Leader of the BSA Pack 511 from 2005-2009.

Stacey Dickert McManus

Stacey was a wonderful wife and Mom. She was a beautiful person from the inside out; a loving, kind and thoughtful daughter and daughter-in-law. She was kind, compassionate and caring; quick to offer assistance anywhere she went. Stacey’s wonderful sense of humor and quick wit must have gotten her (and the family) through so many situations.

She was an extremely faithful volunteer at Christ Church Episcopal Church and School. Stacey organized fundraisers, silent auctions, bazaars and arts and craft shows. She continued to teach Vacation Bible School long after her own children were too old to attend. Stacey rang her bells proudly in the Church’s bell choir. She was a volunteer in the health room throughout her children’s elementary years and beyond. She was a Parent Ambassador and an active Parent Organization leader.

Stacey was graduated from the College of Charleston in 1989 with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Business and Psychology. She then attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

Stacey had a knack for finding the most unusual of items, but it was exactly what you needed. She had the patience of a saint, the strength of an athlete and the gentle, kind heart of a lovely woman.

Meghan Alexandra McManus

Meghan was a very beautiful, active, athletic and artistic young woman; so full of life, faith and happiness. She was a faith-filled volunteer at Christ Church Episcopal, an acolyte and acolyte youth coordinator, and active in Young Life. Meghan loved and excelled in sports throughout life, including basketball, tennis and softball. She played for Saint Joseph’s School in middle school and varsity sports for Christ Church Episcopal School. Meghan was also a CCES vestry member and Honor Roll student. She was recently recognized as the Presbyterian College Fellow at Awards Night.

Meghan gave the best hugs, and her sunny disposition touched everyone’s hearts. She will be sorely missed by her friends, teammates, family and boyfriend Osborne Brown.

Connor Michael McManus

Connor was a lively, loving, sensitive and giving young man. He was involved in the Buncombe Street Methodist Boy Scout Troop where he recently received his Life Badge and was in the process of earning his Eagle Scout award – something he and his Dad participating in together. He played middle school and Junior Varsity football for Christ Church Episcopal School. He was an avid reader since early childhood, once referring to the library as the “free store”. He also served as an acolyte at his church.

Connor never failed to care for anyone in his presence. He was always so willing to play with his younger cousins. Connor’s smile was always infectious.

May God hold each of our beloved in the palm of His hand, and grant His peace onto those who mourn.
