Reverend Hugh Wyman Dowd, 81, died Thursday, January 18, 2018. Wyman was born on October 9, 1936, to Warren and Elease Shealy Dowd. He was baptized and confirmed at Mt. Tabor Luther Church. He graduated from Little Mountain High School, Newberry College, and Southern Lutheran Theological Seminary, where he did additional graduate studies. In 1961, he married Edna Earle Fant from Silverstreet, SC. They have four children: Maffett Warren Dowd of Charleston, Mrs. Brent Ashbaugh, William Wyman Dowd of Charleston, and Louisa Dowd Smith (Kevin) of Greenville, NC. He was blessed with and delighted in his two grandchildren, Nicholas and Cameron Smith. He was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1960 and has served the following congregations: Bachman Chapel, Prosperity, SC; St. Paul, Pomaria, SC; Trinity, Georgetown, SC; St. James, Lexington, SC, and Holy Comforter, Charleston, SC where he served for 29 years. During those 40 plus years as a parish pastor, he served the South Carolina Synod in various ways. In June, 2011 he was recognized by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the South Carolina Synod for 50 years of service. After retirement he proudly refurbished his old home and lived there until his death.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 21st from 5:00-6:00pm at McSwain Evans Funeral Home in Newberry.
The celebration of life service will be held at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, Little Mountain, SC, on Monday, January 22 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice, Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, or the Little Mountain Rescue Squad.
