Verta Mae Martin Lathrop, 89, of Chapin, widow of Henry “Jill” Lathrop, Sr., died Monday, August 15, 2016, at White Oak Manor.

Born on April 30, 1927, in Chapin, she was a daughter of the late Yancy and Phrone Frick Martin. Mrs. Lathrop was a former employee of General Electric and was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Chapin. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by a son, Earl Lathrop, Jr. of Chapin; grandchildren, Tammy (Todd) Livingston and Christy (Chris) Hazel and great-grandchildren, Taylor Livingston, Logan Hazel and Jarrett Hazel. Mrs. Lathrop was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Fay Lathrop and by all of her siblings, Virginia Kingsmore, Geneva Cannon, Claude Martin and Roy Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at St. Peter Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dave Tholstrup. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Livingston, 4048 St. Phililp's Church Road, Newberry. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, SC 29036 or to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108.

Those attending the funeral service are asked to dress casual.

The family would like to thank the staff of Palmetto Health Hospice - Rachel Rister, Charlotte Berry, Eva Lyles and Erin Mills, and the staff of White Oak Manor and a very special friend Rayleen Hollis for their loving care.

Active pallbearers will be Todd Livingston, Jarrett Hazel, Chris Hazel, Wesley Blackburn, Butch Russell and Walter Frick.
