Virginia W. Hawkins

Virginia Bess Westmoreland Hawkins, 96, of Newberry, widow of Herman Eugene Hawkins, died Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at Self Regional Healthcare.

Born on November 27, 1921, in Charlotte, NC, she was a daughter of the late Emanuel Wilburn Westmoreland and Victoria Bess Washam Westmoreland. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church and served the church in many capacities over the years. She was a very devoted mother who spent many years caring for her children. Her son, Michael, predeceased her in 2009. She is survived by a daughter, Bridget Hawkins Tunstall of Greenwood; a brother, Billy Westmoreland; grandchildren, Bess Tunstall (Danny) Hoy and Billy “Tee” Alvin Tunstall, III, and a great-granddaughter, Emerson Victoria Hoy. She was predeceased by siblings, Margaret W. Lindsay, Sara W. Shealy, Emanuel “Pete” Westmoreland, Thomas Westmoreland, and Withers Westmoreland.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, December 29, 2017, at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Earl Schafer. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 pm Friday in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Summer Memorial Lutheran, 1609 Milligan Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Shealy, Tim Shealy, Will Metts, Danny Hoy, Michael Mills, and Vernon Hawkins.
