Walter "Chief" Gray

Walter Jerome “Chief” Gray, 75, of Pomaria, widower of Dawn Gray, died Friday, June 28, 2024 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 20, 1949 in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Leland Gray, Sr. and Freda Louise Hartsell Gray. Walter retired from Georgia Pacific with over 30 years of service. He served twelve years in the South Carolina National Guard. He loved fishing, and especially enjoyed surf fishing in the ocean. Walter always looked forward to taking trips to the beach and to the mountains.

He is survived by a brother, Joseph (Marilyn) Gray; a sister, Suzanne Gray Shealy; and sisters-in-law, Virginia Gray and Sonja Gray. He was predeceased by brothers, Leland Gray, Jr. and Freddie Gray.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, July 6, 2024 in the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jesse Rogers.
