William Albert Smith, Jr., 75, of Newberry, died Sunday, September 5, 2010, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on August 28, 1935, in Chappells, he was a son of the late William Albert Smith, Sr. and Louise Kunkle Smith. Mr. Smith served in the S.C. National Guard and retired from the City of Newberry after 39 years of service. He had worked for the Newberry Fire Department and later as the Superintendent of the City of Newberry Waste Water Treatment Facility. He was a member of the Newberry Pistol Club, a life member of the NRA and the Muzzle Loaders Club of Gray Court. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Mid-State Quail Association. Mr. Smith was a member of the Newberry Historical Society, the Newberry Car Buffs, and the S.C. Law Enforcement Association. He was a member of the Water and Environmental Association, Woodmen of the World, the Boy Scouts of America and an honorary member of the Newberry City Fire Department.
Mr. Smith was an active member of Colony Lutheran Church where he was a former member of the Congregational Council, and a member of the Lutheran Men, the Property Committee, the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, the Service Ministry and the Beautification Project Leader.
Mr. Smith was a loving husband, father and PaPa to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Nichols Smith; a daughter, Sharon Smith (Dale) Cromer of Pomaria; a son, William Stuart (Audra) Smith of Newberry; grandchildren, Kayla Luene Cromer, Rebecca Margaret Cromer, Katie Jane Smith and William Stuart Smith, Jr. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a sister, Mary Helen Hite.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Colony Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jerry Trantham and Rev. Floyd Sides. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
